Description

DoIT’s Office of Instructional Technology will offer the Quality Matters-Focused Course Design Workshop on Wednesday, June 15, 2016  from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm  in ENGR 023 on UMBC's Main Campus.

How does it differ from previous Hybrid Course Design Workshops?

This offering of the workshop will focus hybrid and online course design with a focus on best practices defined by the Quality Matters (QM) Program, an international organization representing broad inter-institutional collaboration and a shared understanding of online course quality. Quality Matters (QM) is a faculty-centered, peer review process that is designed to certify the quality of online and blended courses. QM is a leader in quality assurance for online education and has received national recognition for its scalable, peer-based approach and continuous improvement in online education and student learning.

What topics will be covered in this workshop?

In the morning, participants will be introduced to the three newly defined Alternate Delivery Program (ADP) tracks: Skill Builder, Course Designer, and Quality Booster. They will also learn the principles of effective course design as defined in the QM Rubric and will work in teams to evaluate both the structure and alignment of their course objectives with their content, assignments, and assessments.

Lunch will include a panel consisting of UMBC faculty who have both participated in the Alternate Delivery Program and offered either hybrid or fully online courses. During the working lunch, participants will also learn about resources available through Quality Matters, the Online Learning Consortium (OLC, formerly Sloan Consortium) and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative.

In the afternoon, topics including course content creation and management, communication tools and engagement strategies, and assessment tools and techniques will be presented. This workshop is open to all full or part time UMBC faculty.

ADP Course Designer cohort participants are required to attend.
