National Distance Learning Week 2022: Student Engagement

As we ease ourselves into life back on campus and in the classroom and re-adjust to new modalities of teaching, post-pandemic challenges of student engagement are felt in many ways.

The Chronicle of Higher Education published an article in Spring 2022 entitled  “A ‘Stunning’ Level of Student Disconnection”, and reveals a few widespread challenges faculty are struggling with: student engagement (or lack thereof) in class activities, participating and attending class, and coping with issues of student mental health and well-being. The Chronicle asked over 100 faculty members at varying institutions to share their experiences with student disengagement, and faculty describe a disconcerting level of disconnection among students, using words like “defeated,” “exhausted,” and “overwhelmed” (McMurtrie, 2022). Many faculty have transformed their own practices to better support and engage students given these common challenges.

Following the theme of this article, we welcome you to join us for a one-hour Candid Conversation as UMBC Faculty share their take and experiences re-adjusting to life back in-person and on-campus and discuss challenges, and successes for engaging students.

This session is part of the Instructional Technology Candid Conversations About Online Learning series, launched during the 15th anniversary of National Distance Learning Week (NDLW) from November 7-11, 2022.
