Charting Student Misconceptions About Data Visualization – Online Event
Date & Time
May 2, 2025, 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
Description
In this presentation, Rebecca Williams (CSEE) shares results and insights from ongoing work initiated through the 2023 LA Fellowship. Her project addresses persistent student misconceptions in data visualization courses (CMSC 436/636).
Using innovative teaching strategies, Williams helps students learn to critically analyze, annotate, and critique diverse visualization examples beyond typical course materials. By incorporating deeper qualitative analysis, richer demographic data, and evaluating how student-created charts evolve over time, the project aims to significantly improve visual literacy and critical thinking skills.
Participants will explore practical approaches to identifying and addressing student misconceptions, ideas for engaging students with foraging and curating their own learning examples, and gain strategies applicable to enhancing visual literacy across various disciplines.
Please join us for this hybrid event on May 2!
A Webex meeting link will be sent to registered participants the morning of the talk.
