“Part- time administrative Assistants” Job Scam
Still More Scams
The Division of Information Technology (DoIT) is receiving reports of a job scam claiming to offer a remote position as an administrative/research assistant. Below is an example of this job scam where the scammer is claiming to be either a Professor Fei Cheng or Professor Moon, J. Donald, or possibly both.
From: Prof Fei Cheng <nengenengab@gmail.com> Date: Fri, Apr 2, 2021 at 10:35 AM Subject: Part- time administrative Assistants To: The services of a student administrative/ research assistant is urgently required to work part-time and get paid $300 weekly. This position is open to under- graduate students only and tasks will be carried out remotely. If interested, reply via this email address with a copy of your updated resume or a functional phone number for further details or text the center director on (623) 455-5986. sincerely Professor. The message above is being sent from a Gmail account <nengenengab@gmail.com> and not a UMBC account. This is not the first time DoIT has seen a campaign from this email address, for more information on a previous campaign click here: https://itsecurity.umbc.edu/critical/?id=100402
The email is claiming to offer a job as an administrative/research assistant. The email is asking recipients to respond either by email or text with their resume and a functional phone number. If you receive this or any similar email, please do not respond.
What to do now?
If you do receive this or a similar scam, please DO NOT respond any further or click on any URLs. If you have provided any banking or financial information, please notify your bank or financial institution immediately. If you have been sent a check, you should not attempt to cash or deposit it. If you have deposited a check already, please contact your bank and tell them that it may be part of a scam.
Whether you responded to the scam or not, please forward the message (with the email headers) to security@umbc.edu. We will also keep track of any other information you submit about the scammers, such as their phone numbers. If you were sent a check or other materials, please send pictures of it and the envelope they came in.
