Are you curious how data can inform your teaching and student learning? If so, then join us for an engaging, thought-provoking presentation by John Whitmer, Senior Fellow, Data Science at the Federation of American Scientists (FAS) and widely-respected learning analytics researcher. He’s also a friend of UMBC having collaborated on a variety of UMBC LA projects about predictive analytics, course design, student social and emotional learning (SEL) and ethical analytics. During this first meeting of UMBC’s LA Community of Practice of the new academic year, Whitmer will discuss some highlights from prior research (e.g., what we know, where we’re going), describe current national-level initiatives to increase learning analytics by federal funding agencies and private philanthropy, and offer guidance about ethical, equity and legal issues.
