“Hiring for Research Assistants” Job Scam

Beware Offers for Part-Time, Remote "Assistant" Jobs!

The Division of Information Technology (DoIT) is receiving reports of a job scam claiming to offer a remote position as a research assistant for the Information Technology Center. Below is an example of this scam where the scammer is impersonating a Professor Fei Cheng.

Date: Thu, 25 Mar 2021

Subject: Hiring for Research Assistants

To:



The Information Technology Center is currently hiring students to work

remotely as Research assistants and get paid $300 weekly.

To proceed with the application process submit your full name, functional

phone number and major via this email address or text the Center director

(747) 255-2483.

The message above is being sent from a Gmail account <nengenengab@gmail.com> and not a UMBC account. The email is claiming to offer a job as a research assistant. The email is asking recipients to respond either by email or text with their personal information, for example their full name, cell phone number and major. If you receive this or any similar email, please do not respond.


Also, please note that UMBC has no organization called the “Information Technology Center”, nor a Professor Fei Cheng, nor a medical school.


What to do now?


If you do receive this or a similar scam, please DO NOT respond any further or click on any URLs. If you have provided any banking or financial information, please notify your bank or financial institution immediately. If you have been sent a check, you should not attempt to cash or deposit it. If you have deposited a check already, please contact your bank and tell them that it may be part of a scam.

 

Whether you responded to the scam or not, please forward the message (with the email headers) to security@umbc.edu. We will also keep track of any other information you submit about the scammers, such as their phone numbers. If you were sent a check or other materials, please send pictures of it and the envelope they came in.
