Description

How do you make a graph meaningful to someone who can’t see it? What makes an infographic accessible beyond just alt text?

Take your image descriptions to the next level. This session explores practical strategies for describing complex visuals -- such as graphs, conceptual diagrams, and multi-layered infographics -- so that all learners can access the content they convey. We’ll also discuss how AI-generated descriptions can support this work, and when they fall short.

Session Objectives
  • Differentiate between simple and complex image descriptions
  • Create long descriptions or accessible alternatives for complex visuals
  • Use discipline-specific strategies to make visuals accessible
This intermediate workshop will provide you with adaptable techniques for more inclusive course design.

This session will be facilitated by Dr. Mariann Hawken, Director of Instructional Technology. Open to all faculty and instructional staff. Experience with writing image descriptions is recommended.
