Since 2010, myUMBC has provided students with a feedback "dashboard" called Check My Activity (CMA) that allows them to compare their own Blackboard (Bb) Learning Management System (LMS) activity to an anonymous summary of course peers. Why might they want to do so? Typically, students earning a D or F use Bb ~40% less than students earning a C or higher. But what do students actually think of the CMA's feedback about their Bb usage? Do they believe their own digital footprints can serve as a plausible, reliable and even predictable proxy of their course engagement? In this presentation, Human-Centered Computing graduate student Prachee Javiya will share her qualitative findings and lessons learned analyzing more than 500 “opt-in” student comments over the past decade. She’ll also share recommendations on how the CMA can be improved. Time permitting, we’ll also explore how faculty might leverage the CMA to amplify the feedback impact of their Bb course designs & grades.
