Gemini AI: Your New Study Partner and Lesson Planner

Using Google's generative AI for learning and creativity

Turning Complexity into Clarity with Your Enterprise License

In a world where AI is becoming commonplace, students must learn how to navigate these tools. Luckily, UMBC's enterprise license for Google Workspace means the basic features of Google Gemini AI are available to all UMBC users free of charge. This powerful generative AI tool accelerates both learning and teaching by offering sophisticated content generation and summarization capabilities. Importantly, the information you type into the free version of Gemini AI is protected for Level 1 data, which is data not considered public. This could include internal communications and non-sensitive administrative data.

Common Use: Personalized Learning and Instructional Design Gemini serves as a versatile assistant for both students and faculty, accelerating research, study, and course preparation.

The Storyline: From Struggle to Strategy

  • The Student's Edge: Imagine a student needing to prepare for a major exam. Instead of just re-reading notes, they can upload their lecture slides or a textbook chapter and ask Gemini to: "Create a custom practice quiz based on this file and include short answer questions". To make learning portable, they can ask the tool to "Turn these lecture slides into a podcast-style audio summary for listening on my commute".

  • The Faculty's Time-Saver: A faculty member designing a new course can use Gemini's generative capabilities to quickly "Outline a lesson plan for a 50-minute introductory biology class", or "Generate a rubric for a final presentation assignment". This allows them to focus on high-level course design, rather than administrative drafting.
