GO Chat: Shifting Super-sized Courses Online

Dr. Sarah Bass is a Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at UMBC. She received her Bachelor’s in Chemistry and Mathematics at Notre Dame of Maryland University in Baltimore, MD, and her PhD in Chemistry at UMBC. She teaches CHEM 101 and 102, as well as some advanced laboratory classes. She focuses on evidence-based pedagogy to achieve her teaching goals which (i) enable students to take responsibility for their learning, (ii) empower students to develop critical thinking skills, and (iii) provide context in order to illustrate the importance of the topic at hand. Most importantly, she shares UMBC’s commitment to inclusive and innovative education, as well as the belief that the responsibility of an educator is broader than conveying subject matter alone. 

Dr. Tara Carpenter is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. She received her Bachelors in Chemistry at Thiel College in Greenville, PA and her PhD in Analytical Chemistry at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. She teaches CHEM 101 and 102 and oversees that curriculum. As an instructor for one of the largest introductory courses at UMBC, she is interested in evidence-based pedagogical approaches that will enhance the learning experience of today’s student. One of her primary goals is to help her students, who are primarily freshmen, make the transition from high school to college so that they can get the most out of their education and prepare well for their career.  She continually modifies the resources she provides and the tools that she uses based on evidence and student feedback. Dr. Carpenter is intrigued by the science of learning and investigating student motivation as they take responsibility for the degree that they will earn at UMBC.
