Description

UMBC's Instructional Technology staff interviews colleagues to talk about all things instructional technology and Going Online. Our guests bring their insight and experiences to the table, followed by a Q&A session from our audience.

This month we kick off the new year with a dive into all-things-open, as in Open Educational Resources (OER), Open Pedagogy, and Open Science.

We will be talking with UMBC alum Dr. Karen Cangialosi, a Professor of Biology and Open Education Faculty Fellow at Keene State College in Keene, New Hampshire. Karen facilitates an Open pedagogy faculty learning community, and she is co-leader of KSC Open, a Domain of One’s Own campus project.

Karen spearheaded a movement to replace traditional textbooks with OER and other freely available resources for almost all KSC biology courses; and she incorporates methods of Open Pedagogy in all of her courses. She is committed to helping bring about larger-scale change in higher education, particularly in STEM education, with innovative and digital pedagogies, and creating authentic "student-centered" learning.

Karen works towards addressing the challenges of sustainability of Biology OER and incorporating OEP (Open Educational Practices) in STEM. She integrates the principles and practices of Open Science into her courses and the undergraduate Biology curriculum at KSC.  Read more about Karen at her website: https://karencang.net/

We hope you will join us to learn more about Karen's work and passion for open pedagogy. Following our interview, session participants are encouraged to join us for a Q&A session.
