Cybersecurity Awareness Month

Four ways to stay safe online

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month and UMBC wants to help you keep your information safe. Follow these four steps to increase your cybersecurity:

  1. Avoid Phishing Attacks Phishing attacks aim to gain access to your system or steal your personal information through malicious attachments or links.
Learn more about phishing and scams here.
  2. Create Strong Passwords/Passphrases The longer your password the more difficult it is to crack.
Find more information about UMBC Password safety here
  3. Use Multi-Factor Authentication MFA adds a second layer of security to your online accounts by combining something you know (i.e., your password) with something you have (i.e., your device or token).
Learn more about Multi-Factor Authentication here
  4. Install Updates Installing software and operating system updates ensures you have the most up-to-date protection.
Keep Software Up to Date with Three Simple Steps here.

The Division of Information Technology will send posts about these steps throughout October.
